A Wee More About Us

We came from different countries and cultures

We all love sport and coaching, but have differrent backgrounds and sport experience

We met each other during our MSc course in Edinburgh

Nice to meet you, in alphabetic order we are:

Faris Tsai

MSc (S&C), NSCA-CSCS

Interested in combat sports and competed as a muay thai fighter before. Trying to be a decent weightlifter while there is still a room for improvement. I believe it is a good way for S&C coach to learn how to coach if they train themselves and compete as the athletes.

With the abundant coaching experience from rugby and basketball varsities, youth tennis players and amateur triathletes. In addition, I got some invaluable lessons from coaching China national figure skating and cross-country skiing team.

Despite of the coaching, I am also interested in sports technology. With the previous experience, I am familiar with the force plate related assessments. Recently, I am investigating the reliability between different velocity detection equipment and the application of velocity-based concept.

In the UoE, I did the internship as a sport scientist in Scottish Rugby Union. In addition, my dissertation was to investigate the IMTP and dynamic performance in academy rugby players, and to find out the physical characteristics differences in rugby athletes by different playing levels.

‘’Embrace the people who challenge you rather than affirm your thoughts all the time, they will broaden your perspective.’’

Jack Thompson

SnatchJack.jpg
  • MSc in Strength and Conditioning

  • BSC in Health and Exercise Science at the University of Aberdeen

I am waiting for my graduation in strength and conditioning (MSc) at The University of Edinburgh. During this time, I completed an internship at Oriam, Scotland’s National Performance Centre for Sport, as a sports scientist for scholar-shipped athletes of dissimilar sports. This also led me to complete my dissertation at Oriam, concerning the minimal dose of high intensity, interval training (HIIT) to promote aerobic/anaerobic adaptation in football players. The use of the football population is indicative of my interests: sports science within this area.

I was recently employed by Oriam; working for Hearts as a performance analyst, Dunedin Netball Club as their lead strength and conditioning coach, and some additional work for the Woman’s National Academy (NPA and u15s) as their sports scientist. Moreover, I work as an online strength and conditioning coach within woman’s rugby, and a personal/group trainer at a gym named Fusion. The variance of these roles allows me to view and understand sports science as the multi-factorial practice that it is.

Within the coming months, I will be working towards my Strength and Conditioning Specialist Certification (CSCS), accredited by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), as well as my UKSCA accreditation.

John Archbold

I am John, I am from Scotland and I enjoy lots of sports.

I am particularly interested in strength training with a focus on improving performance in track cycling. My main goal just now is to get as powerful as possible on the bike, which involves following a periodised training program incorporating a lot of lower body strength work as well as olympic lifting.

I also enjoy playing tennis, squash, badminton and hockey for fun. I dislike bullshit, people who over complicate things and people who don’t try hard.

I have worked within performance sport at the University of Edinburgh, as well as with Hibernian FC first team. I hope to gain my UKSCA accreditation within the next 6 months. I also conducted a study investigating the effects of a convection head cooling device on physical/cognitive performance in hyperthermic athletes as my MSc dissertation. I therefore have an interest in methods of mitigating performance decline in hot climates.

Leandro Mosconi

MSc (S&C), FMS (1-2 lev.), ISSA, FIT, FIPE, CPR

Straight out the Pizza Pasta and Mandolino’s country (Yes I am talking about Italy). Since the age of 4, I have played tennis competing in one Challenger when I was 17. I quit my superb tennis career after a winner with the left hand against the GOAT Roger Federer.

I did my BSc in Sport Science in Milan and completed an MSc in Strength and Conditioning (MSc) in Edinburgh. Moreover, I have other certifications (FMS, CPR) and I have attended different NSCA conferences.

I recently had to deal with off-road motorcycle (Motocross, enduro, trial) riders in Edinburgh, but currently working in Italy and Switzerland with some WTA and ITF players as an S&C coach and tennis coach as well. My biggest dream is to help more athletes and players reach their sporting goals.

Nicholas Lam

MSc, CSCS, NSCA-CPT, MSST

Hi guys, I'm Nicholas from Hong Kong. I used to be a competitive swimmer for like 12 years but I stopped when I was 18 because I can't see any future of me being a professional swimmer.

Then I did Sports Therapy for my Bachelor which explained why I am a registered sports therapist (The Society of Sports Therapist, UK). Although I can't be professional athletes, being a sports therapist could help athletes to achieve their goal! I am so lucky that I got the chances to work as a pitchside medic and massage therapist for Hong Kong Sevens. I got the chance to meet and treat elite athletes like the fastest man in rugby - Carling Isles.

However, I realized that I am more into training athletes rather than treating injured athletes so I decided to go to the University of Edinburgh for a Strength and Conditioning masters degree. I'm glad that I met all these people who are also on this blog. Doing a MSc in S&C at UofE inspired me to be a researcher, I would like to contribute to the sports through evidence-based research. That's why I am currently doing my PhD in the University of Edinburgh, sounds tough but that's how we make good athletes right?

My current research interest: Mental Fatigue; warm-up for sports performance; and acute supplement ingestion for sports performance.
**Feel free to contact me for research collaboration!**

Sheng-Han Wu

CSCS, MSc

  • MSc in Strength and Conditioning

  • Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA)

I am particularly interested in the neuromuscular aspects of sports performance. My dissertation research was about a comparison of EMG amplitude between weightlifting derivatives. Before coming to UK, I worked as a strength and conditioning coach. Previously I have trained with elite alpinist, youth athletics athletes, and paralympic badminton players. I have also collaborated with Taiwan Highschool Basketball League to help to build athlete profiles by conducting various kinds of performance tests.

I am also into using sport tech devices like EMG, motion tracking, and force plates. I have used these tools for athlete monitoring and research.

Currently, I am working as a volunteer S&C coach at the City of Edinburgh Basketball Academy. At the same time, I compete in weightlifting and representing Edinburgh University Weightlifting Club.

In addition, from upcoming February, I will be a Technician Restricted Profile Anthropometrist, recognized by the International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK).

I am interested mostly in combat sports, and more specifically grappling sports. I am myself a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, competing as often as possible, and training under professor Rick Young at Rick Young's Black Belt Academy in Edinburgh, Scotland.

I have recently cooperated with the physiology lab at the University of Edinburgh, where we established an evaluation program for combat sport athletes. I am also available for PT sessions at the UoE's gym (Saint Leonard's gym).

Federico Ziella

  • BSc sport science

  • MSc Sport Science and Health and Physical Activities

Ciao, I am a sport and movement enthusiast called Federico (better call me Zi). I have practiced artistic gymnastics since the age of 6 competing in the highest Italian championship.

When I was in the high school I experienced different sports and started to be fascinated by the sport science industry. After that I attended the University in Milan and I got my master degree in Sport Science and Health and Physical Activities (my favourite class? Definitely physiology)

I strongly believe that everyone should rediscover the importance of the movement and human body control. I reckon the quality of the movement to be the best medicine in the world, preventing tons of annoying physical injuries and menthal issues. I am currently working as a Strength and Conditioning coach for some Italian Olympic Gymnasts, who I am deeply proud of.

I would like to be a guide for my athletes and my clients helping them to achieve their goals and dreams.
